Busting the January Blues – The Jolie Way

19th October 2018

January used to be my least favourite month of the year, that is until I chose to do something about it. Whether its the lack of pre Christmas excitement, a stretched out pay packet, an accumulated hangover or simply the idea of going back to work, there are lots of reasons we dread January.

Theres also a reason we call it feeling “blue”, as colour has a profound impact on our mindset, blue being the most cold and corporate if used incorrectly. The psychological impact of colour is just one of the sensory routes we explore when designing bespoke Jolie spaces, however it is incredible to hear our clients describe the positive impact our colour selections have on them.

To help you to bust those January blues, and for a general pick me up to turn to year round, we have pulled together a list of small changes you can make to your space. We like to call it Comfort & Joy…

Colours & Lighting:

Lighting- Warm bulbs and Candles to add a level of comfort.

Colours- Mustard hues for optimism, soft Olive Greens for health & Blossom tones for tranquility.

Textures:

Blankets- A blanket provides comfort for many reasons, however leading touch professor Francis Mcglone describes one of the most comforting forms of touch as upper body, around the back and tops of arms. Ensuring you have a blanket in your home, or even workplace, can be a lifesaver in times of stress and discomfort. We suggest going for a soft weighted blanket like this one from Zara home- £79.99;

Fragrances:

Aromatherapy (in a diffuser)- Neroli: Natural antidepressant Sweet Orange: Uplifting Lemon: Clarity (always seek professional advice for quantities of oils)

Fragrance –  For a hit of comfort, balance this with our favourite Aesop Istros Aromatique room spray- Aesop.com £37.00

Sound:

For our January pick of background music to inspire and comfort go for the Blue Planet II soundtrack- Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea & David Fleming. (Can be found on all great music subscription services)

Taste:

Go for Vitamin D and Omega 3 boosting food- Our favourite at this time of year is Smoked Salmon & Poached Eggs with Spinach, but you can mix it up.
